BURSARIES

The ANU Endowment Accommodation Bursary Scheme is one of the projects in the Endowment for Excellence Scheme.

The ANU Endowment Accommodation Bursary is designed to assist full time ANU students, established in permanent accommodation, who are experiencing unexpected financial hardship. Priority may be given to students nearing the end of their studies and needing assistance to complete. All applications are considered by a committee. Lodging an application DOES NOT guarantee a bursary will be awarded.

Types of bursaries available are:

• Emergency Undergraduate Accommodation Bursaries

Available to full time ANU students currently enrolled as candidates for award in an undergraduate course of study.
Student must be able to demonstrate the emergency nature of application.
Bursaries are generally allocated for the period of the emergency as
determined by the Committee. These bursaries are usually granted for
periods of 4 – 8 weeks.

• Emergency Graduate Accommodation Bursaries

Available to full time students currently enrolled as candidates for award in a
postgraduate course of study.
Student must be able to demonstrate emergency nature of application.
Bursaries are allocated for the period of the emergency as
determined by the Committee to a maximum of 24 weeks.

• Bursary for Students with a Disability (all funds allocated for 2008)

Students must be:

• an enrolled ANU student;
• enrolled as a candidate for award;
• be listed with the University as a student with a disability; and
• not be the recipient of any other bursary or scholarship provided by the University, with the exception of the ANU Access Scholarship.

Applications will be assessed by the Disability Liaison Officer.

• Undergraduate Accommodation Bursaries

Undergraduate Accommodation Bursaries are awarded for up to a maximum of 40 weeks. Students must:

Be enrolled as an ANU student;

• Be enrolled as a candidate for award on a full-time basis;
• be a HECS-liable student, deferring in full their HECS payment; and
• not be in receipt of a substantial scholarship (over $5,000).

Applications for Semester 2, 2008 bursaries opened on the 18th July 2008. Payments are backdated to the start of Semester 1 and are made directly to the Hall to offset rental expenses. Students in private accommodation will receive a lump sum payment. Applicants will be assessed by the Undergraduate Bursary Committee on the basis of financial need. Income and the number of hours they must work per week to cover living expenses will be taken into consideration. Applications for semester 2 bursaries close on the 8th August 2008.

• Graduate Accommodation Bursaries

Graduate accommodation Bursaries are awarded on a per semester basis, up to a maximum of 48 weeks. Students must be:

• enrolled as a graduate student at ANU;
• enrolled as a candidate for award on a full-time basis; and
• in demonstrated need and thus normally not in receipt of substantial scholarship or substanial finanical assistance from any other source.

Applications will be assessed by a committee comprising representatives from the International Education Office, University Accommodation Services, the Postgraduate and Research Students' Association and a nominee of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Bursaries are awarded to those experiencing unusual difficulties with living expenses, not to assist with course fees or book fees.

The bursaries are awarded on a per semester basis. 

Applications for Semester 2, 2008 opened on the 18th July 2008. Applications should not be lodged until after arrival in Canberra as actual current living expenses must be quoted, not estimates. Applications for Semester 2 busaries close on the 8th August 2008.

Applications and Closing Dates

Applications for Emergency Bursaries can be lodged at any time. Emergency bursaries are to assist with periods of short, sudden, unexpected difficulty and are usually granted for periods of 4 to 8 weeks.

Regular Bursary applications for Semester 2 2008 opened on the 18th July 2008. Applications for Semester 2 busaries close on the 8th August 2008.

How much is the bursary worth?

The bursary is equivalent to half the weekly tariff at the self-catered residences. In 2007 the bursary will be $70 per week. Funds are paid directly to the residence if the student lives in a hall or college or are paid directly to the student if living in private accommodation. Funds are paid on a per semester basis.

When will I be notified?

Applications are considered by a committee. The composition of each committee is notified on the application form. The committees will meet soon after the closing date to consider the applications and applicants will be advised whether or not they are successful within 3-4 weeks of the committee meeting.

Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of the committees and subject to availability of funds.
