BURTON & GARRAN HALL
Burton and Garran Hall forms a wonderful, exciting and fulfilling
community for any student at University.
We have a majority Undergraduate residents and a separate floor for Postgraduate
and later year students.
|

|
Burton and Garran Hall was originally two separate halls. Burton Hall was
established in 1965, named after Professor Herbert ‘Joe’ Burton , a Queenslander
and Rhodes Scholar who played an active role in Australian tertiary education.
Garran Hall, was name after Sir Robert Gandolph Garran in recognition of his
contributions to university education and to the development of Canberra. In
1983 the two Halls combined to become Burton and Garran Hall.

B&G is in walking distance to most schools, faculties and Union Court. We
run shopping trips to supermarkets and fresh fruit markets 4 times a week.
Public transport is accessible from outside the front of Hall. The city
interchange is located 15 min walk from the Hall. We provide bike sheds for you
to lock away your bike. A large number of residents cycle to and from lectures.

|

|
Burton and Garran Hall provides a comprehensive academic and pastoral support
network made up of the Head of Hall, Dean of Residents, Sub-Deans, Senior
Residents, Academic Scholars and Mentors. The Hall has a number of study rooms
and a library. Our Residents Committee organises social, sporting and arts
events and B&G Green encourages environmental activities in Hall.
|
|

|
B&G has six music rooms in Central Block, all on the ground floor. Music
students may obtain a key for the rooms and have priority over other residents;
however, any resident may gain access to practice in their own personal time.
|

|
|

|
Washing machines and dryers are available at the back of Central Block. Usage
of these machines is free, however residents must supply their own washing
powder and detergents.
|
|

|
There is a carpark next to the Hall where residents can park. Residents need
to purchase an
ANU Parking
permit, then they are issued with a B&G residents permit (free of
charge). More permits are issued than parking spots, so residents are not
guaranteed a parking space. Canberra's network of bike paths and public
transport is quite good, so we encourage residents to save money and not bring a
car.
|
|

|
Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Each Senior Resident
on a floor has a vacuum cleaner that is readily accessible for residents to use
in their rooms. Rooms are inspected on a quarterly basis.

B&G is great place to explore different paths. The jump from high school
to university can be daunting, but there are many making the same leap with you.
Living and studying at B&G is a great chance to try new experiences, to
break the mould and perhaps re-shape yourself a little. If you have harboured an
interest in music, or sport or politics or the environment, and not had the
opportunities to be involved before, now is your chance. And more than likely
there will be other B&G residents interested in the same things. I urge you
to make those connections with others and push yourself to see what else you can
do. The friendships you make here in college will be life-long and the best
memory you will retain of your time at B&G. Your peers will also be your
most effective support in achieving your academic potential.
